1994 960 wagon problems list[ALL/1998] posted by JH on

Here is a list of most of the problems we’ve experienced with our 1994 Volvo 960 wagon.
We bought it in Nov of 95 with 19800 mi.
It now has 30200 miles.
1. Speaker in rear door inoperative
2. screw missing holding on dome light
3. passenger side heated mirror burned out (these three items were upon delivery)
4. oil leak near front of block from bad O-ring
5. drivers side seat belt not retracting fully. (door shuts on it)
6. drivers side heated mirror burned out.
7. Battery hold down clamp missing.
8. paint seems to be chipping (many small nicks) more than expected on the nose and hood. (Highway sand)
9. Twice car was difficult to start (flooded) (gas fouled plugs) Once it had just been run for a few minutes then shut off prior to difficulty starting.
10. Ceiling panel flutters (helicopter on roof effect) with sun roof open and windows shut.
11. Front alloy wheels corroding from brake dust (clean them often)
12. Tailgate pistons replaced (new ones same thing, to get the tailgate to go up by itself, up you must lift it to head level.)

Most of these problems were taken care of by the dealership. The car is still under warranty.

Don’t get me wrong, we love the car and the first class treatment we get from our dealership.
I’m especially impressed with the way the car handles. I run 36 psi in the rear tires and 30 in front.
I’m interested in hearing from other 960 and 940 owners

Thanks

Interesting list of items. I am having trouble with retractors not fully pulling the front seat belts back and being caught in the doors. Not sure if that's under my extended used car warranty or not. Could be under the seat belt warranty, however.

My lifts also operate the same way. I though they might be worn because it has a third seat and was regularly used by kids. Sounds like it might be by design, but I can't imagine why...

Otherwise no complaints with 38,000 miles on it. I run about the same tire pressure, although I understand your suspension is much different than the origianl 92, or did they change it in 95? One way to tell, I think...how many gallon tank do you have in your SW. If its 15.8 (bummer), not 21+, then its still the old style suspension.

There is a body tape you can purchase, maybe through IPD that protects you nose a bit. It can be painted to match. Mine's the same way.

My biggest problem is the VOlvo alarm that I should not have put in. What a piece of junk. Only mistake, I think. Car is great.

Shatz, Are the rear lid lifts made of metal or plastic typr on your 960? I just remember hearing from someone that they had problems with sag due to the seal in gas piston and the walls of cylinder, (Plastic type), not keeping round, so gas leaks and weight load of cylinder is lowered. Along with the tailgate! Is the angle of the lid when fully open radicaly different on 960 than 240? Stoney

Stoney, first of all your follow-up along with mine appears in a completely different thread thean the original quiry! What happen here.

But to answer your question, I don't know , I'll have to look. I thought that all of the Volvo OE lifts were metal tubes, not plastic. Thanks for the tip, tho.

Note: Shatz, you are viewing the board with chronological settings instead of Threaded. The most recent is at the top and so on. You can change this and the board will remember what you prefer.

Shatz, I also remembered a bit of useless info. Maybe the sidewalls are thinner on newer gas lifts ? Possible also a change in OEM Vendor ? I have seen gas lifts in US cars that had sagging problem fixed or problem lessened by using several H/D Zip Clip wire clamps. The kind that are about 1/2 in wide. You put 3 on the strut and snug 'em up tight using vice grips and that would return seal and it would hold about 50% better. I also notice that the cheaper the car the cheaper the parts, except for GM where cheap parts are used on all cars. Stoney 1990 240DLc(106K)

Not sure if plastic or metal Had old ones replaced and the new ones work the same. Lifting power is less in cold weather.
