Changing brake fluid[ALL/1998] posted by Paul Shann on

Just bought a '94 940.This car has 31,000 mls and the sevice records indicate that the brake fluid hasn't been changed.I've bled brakes on Volvos before and it's labor intensive.Whats the easiest way to do the job? Will the ABS get in the way? What will a dealer charge for this? I will be doing the work in the driveway so I would like to jack each wheel only once, can it be done? Thanks,I love this place....Paul

Paul, Changing the fluid is not that hard and with 2 people is rather quickly done. Just follow the pattern in the Bentley manual and using a standard jack and either a Mighty Vac one man kit or a friend with a willing foot, it is no harder than an oil change. The last time I did mine I removed all the old fluid in reservoir with a turkey baster,(DO NOT TELL MY WIFE-I BOUGHT HER A NEW ONE), and refilled with new and started my buddy pumping, and within 20 min we were done. It is really easy to tell when the neww fluid has forced the old stuff out, I run about 4 pumps past the point where fluid is clear just to be sure. The only tuff spot is getting to the reset valve on Warning Switch/Equalizer Valve, A long socket extension with a deep socket will help. It just looks messy so most people don't try it. Oh also you might want to put Saran wrap on inner fender and firewall to catch any spilled fluid during process and save the paint job. I tried this last month on my buddy's Toyota when we worked on his brakes and it seemed to keep all the fluid dribbles from getting on the paint and esp. around mounting brackets and screw holes. I also don't recall having any trouble with anti-lock system. The idiot lite reset itself after signal wire was disconnected and reconnected after bleeding. Sorry I did not intend to write a novel here. Stoney
