'97 Volvo 850 GLT SW/'92 940 GL sedan[ALL/1998] posted by TB on

I am seriously considering the purchase of a new 1997 Volvo 850 GLT SW (I already own a 1992 940 GL sedan). Although I know that I may not get totally unbiased opinions on this web site, I would be interested in hearing about current owner's impressions of the 1997 850 GLT SW (including pros and cons vs other similar vehicles). Also, I would appreciate hearing about any maintenance issues I should be on the alert for with my 92 940, which has 31,000 miles on it. Thanks!

Is the 850 series discontinued in 97/98?

Volvo has rebadged the 850 series starting with the 1998 models as the C70/V70 series. They revamped about 60% of thr car, mostly the front end and reskinned the body. The Wagon version seems to have only a new front half body and the rear is very 850ish. Even though it's a 1998 model my local dealer has a sedan sitting in his showroom. Stoney

I have been in the automobile industry for almost 25 years in sales and management. I launched the 850 in October 92 as a franchised dealer in New England. The car has done what no other car in 2 1/2 decades has done for me. It is the first car that I've looked forward to getting into in the morning to go to work and look forward to driving home at night. No other car, including exotics, has had the sustaining long term comfort and enjoyment as the 850. As a repair facility I have not had customer complaints that have been of any serious nature that Volvo didn't step up to and correct in a timely fashion. You're right, I am a little biased. If you need further info (data) on the 97 or 98 850 Wagon/V70 I'd be glad to forward it to you. If you wish, check out our site at volvokeene.com for more info. Thanks for the soapbox!
