'88 740GLE wagon brake questions[ALL/1998] posted by Adam Dixon on

I inquired about brake component at Advance Auto Parts and would told that I need to know if I have Girling or Bendix calipers in order to select the proper rotor and pad. Does this sound right? I thought Bendix was an aftermarket component manufacture r, not a differently designed component.
The Haynes manual shows three possible combinations for brakes (I haven't looked at the service plate yet). 1) Girling front and rear 2) Girling front, ATE rear 3) DBA front, ATE rear.
I bought the wagon last week and notice a history of pad replacements (and rotors twice) by a Volvo dealership. I saw an archive on http://www.cs.earlham.edu/~davel/volvo/faq/volvofaq. html, indicating that Volvo may have pad/rotor problems from the la te 80's and was concerned about what replacement parts to buy.
Any insight is appreciated.
Adam

Adam, I've always had good luck with PBR or Repco pads. No dust and clean wheels, just be sure to get the anti-squeal shim kit with the pads. Bendix is one of several OEM vendors to Volvo, ATE and Girling are other brake suppliers, GM Saginaw makes the power sttering for 240's, Chrysler supplied their ignition system(Awful type). IPD Volvo can supply the brake pads but be sure of maker and year and if you are in doubt they can fax you the outline of the pad shapes and you can match the old one. Or see if your local auto parts guys can supply PBR or Repco. My experience is that some of the Aftermarket chains don't really support Volvo that much, so take a look at the Parts, etc. listings on the Volvophalia page and see if you can find a source near you. Hope you enjoy your Volvo, Welcome to the club! Stoney
