When the flame trap clogs it could really freak you out,but not to worry.I had just bought a used '85-240 and when pulling in my driveway noticed oil smoke billowing from under the hood.I see oil on the firewall, and felt a big hole in back of the engi ne.My heart sank. One phone call to the Volvo parts dealer and he explained that the flame trap was clogged and I blew out a seal on the head. The seal was a rubber like cap that fit in the hole and I replaced the trap.I forget the cost but it wasn't over $ 20.I love my Volvos......Paul

U can check the actual trap by blowing compressed air thru the dipstick hole. If you get pretty good flow out the pcv hoses (past the plastic flame trap), it's probably ok. Also, the small diameter hose coming up out of the plastic flame trap can either get clogged (or) the small port it plugs into can get plugged up.
