: For any of my previous vehicles, I have always depended on the Chilton manual to assist me in : attempting any repair or maintenance. Is the Chilton manual the suggested book for a novice like : myself. I don't think that I would ever get into the re ally involved stuff, but I have always enjoyed : doing my own tune ups. I have a 91 740 wagon. Thank you.

I said the same thing in 1979 - that I would never do anything but oil changes and tune-ups. Then I bought my first Volvo, a 1975 245 (28k) and I learned to tackle any type of repair just by following the manual. I started with the "green" vo lvo manual ($35. in 1979) and consequently bought the larger set in 1982. I now depend on the Volvo Problem Solver, The Bentley Blue Bible (240s), and all of the Haynes. I had an old Chilton or two, but they never seemed to cover as much as the others. I assume you have a B230 and not a 16 valve engine. The B-230 information is covered in-depth in the Bentley, so even though you have a 740, I would consider purchasing one. What we need is a "How to keep your Volvo Alive" manual. I also bought th e Gothenburg Bible, but hardly ever refer to it. It has some useful information, but the writing style was not up to snuff.

How is the Volvo Problem Solver for helping with work on an 850 Turbo? I have the Haynes, just relased for the 850, the Guthenburg Bible, and some Volvo manuals. I'm looking for some basic help with things like brake bleeding, pad changes, and other elementary stuff.

I got the Problem Solver a little over a year ago. It has nothing about the 850 in it. I was supposed to get free updates for a year. I got nothing. I guess that means there were no updates that year, which means there's still nothing about the 850. Brian

Brian -
I've had my problem solver for a few years and can only remember getting an update once - and I think I requested it! I'd even pay more for additional sections!
