765T Once a week oil smoke[ALL/1998] posted by Dick Johnson on

I've developed a strange problem with my 1990 765 Turbo B230FT (97K miles, Mobil 1 10W30 oil). Once a week at cold engine start up I get blue smoke from the exhaust pipe - the quantity is enough to notice in the rear view mirror. After a couple of minutes the smoke stops. For another week all is OK - no smoke. Then it will occur again. The problem is not old enough to judge about increased oil consumption levels. Oil loss past the rings or valve guides is a "all the time" thing right? I've read turbos do not have a "flame trap" to plug up - is there some other PCV device I should clean or replace? Am I having the beginings of turbocharger problems?

Any / all suggestions will be appreciated. TIA, DJ

At that milage you could have: 1) leaking seals in turbo 2) weakened, distorted valve spring causing guide wear 3) crankcase vent system obstruction causing crankcase pressure which forces oil through otherwise non-leaking turbo shaft seals

Verify that crankcase vent system is clear, then listen for an intermittent tapping in upper end of engine that would usually be present if guide/spring problem is in evidence, and then get ready for a ($$) turbo replacement if the first two get you nowhere.
