30 Amp. Aux. Headlight Relay.[ALL/1998] posted by Henry T. Mui. on

On my 84' 240 GL, I purchased a set of Aux. driving headlights. I decided to go with a less expensive set because I had already gone through 2 sets of the Bosch driving headlights. Since I do a lot of highway driving and mostly at nights I tend to get a lot of stone chips. The cheaper set of driving lights did not come with a 30 amp. 12 V headlight relay. So, I decided to just wire it without a relay and use the plastic fuse holder that came with it! Bad mistake... after 2 days the lights no longer worked. I checked all the connections and then the plastic fuse holder. The plastic around the fuse all melted and caused the circuit to short out! I then looked into my tool box and found my old Bosch relay. Figured out that there were numbers where each wire was to go. Example: #87 & 87a goes to L&R (Pos.) lights. # 86 goes to the switch (one side). #85 goes to the ground of the car body. While the last wire is # 30 goes to the fused power source. The 2 L&R wires(Neg.) of the Aux. driving lights are connected to the ground of the car. There is still a missing wire? Is the other wire for the switch goes to the ground of the car body????? I'm not sure it's been a while since I've wired a relay! Any help out there!

You are doing just fine. The signal(Switch) wire just runs from a +12v source in fusebox thru switch to relay and uses low amp voltage to switch the relay on.

I wired my Hellas the same way using a Bosch 30A relay, same set up as yours. Try gtting the neato fog/driving light switch from 850 series. It's sexier lookin and has a real neat LED "idiot" lite function as well.

'Cause it has this function it does need a ground at the switch but most non illuminated switches need no ground at the switch.

Happy Motoring!
