Vortex Generators[ALL/1998] posted by Stoney on

I have seen these used on planes and some cars (Vette's and the like) and wonder if they could be used to affect the airflow problems that appear to happen when the windows/sunroof are open. I think that the airflow disturbance is caused by the window/sunroof opeings altering the pressure of the airflow and the THUDDING is a byproduct. This is similar to problems that occured in development of aircraft cockpit windows as airspeeds increased over the years. Lockheed experienced a problem with P-38 Lightning when the aircraft attempted at takeoff with cockpit side windows in the down position-this caused a vortex at the wing root and disturbed the lift factor enough to cause a stall on takeoff.

I have seen a few Volvos with a strip of Vortex generators on front edge of roof in between the sunroof and the leading edge of the roof. Don't know that it worked, though...IPD did a write up on 'em but more towards tweaking .002 more on 1/4 mile acceleration (this was before 850 Motronics kit).

Any a you Aerospace TechWarriors out there have any input?
