740 stopping[ALL/1998] posted by David Kassube on

I have a 740 gle that has stopped 3 times in the last month. It won't restart in anywhere from 45min to 2 days. I have determined that it is loosing its spark and think it might be the hall effect transistor. Its running again after replacing zero parts. I checked the connections several times with no success. After removing the distributor the ignition came back to life and ran for 40 miles. Then the next morning it wouldn't start again? 1 hour later I tried it again, It started and has been working since. Any common problems you've heard about? Where can I get detailed trouble shooting info on Bosch ek-117 ignition systems? If volve is the only source which manual should I get? Thanks

Probably your best bet is to get a wiring diagram and trace where you're losing voltage. The hall senders do fail but it isn't that common. The "power stage" can also fail. This is located behind the drivers side headlight on the inner fender.

David, What is the year of your car? Try to determine for sure if you have no spark. Also determine if the fuel pump is running while you crank the engine. You can usually hear it run or better yet, place your hand on the pump while some one cranks the engine. You should feel it if its running. If you have no spark and no fuel, the hall switch IS the most likely cause. If you have either fuel or spark, the hall switch is likely ok. Do some basic checks and let us know if you need more help.
