I have a 92/960 and I was just as confused as you were the first few times I looked under the hood. I was able to watch the 30K tune-p and found ut that changing the plugs is really quite simple. They are indeed buried which make it look very clean under the hood, but a little spooky.
Remove the screws ( I think they are torx heads) from the cover plate and when the plate is removed, you will expose all the plugs. You'll need an extention on the wrench to reach the plugs as they are set down in the block., sort of like the old renault engines. As I recall the wires are held at each plug and those screws also need to be removed. It should be obvious once the plate is taken off. I plan to do my 60k, unless I'm in the Champaign IL area so a longtime trusted mechanic can do it. As it is an inline six, the plugs are sitting there for easy removal.
