Seals Leaking & need advise[ALL/1998] posted by Robin F. Clear on

My '86 740 GLE has both a very faint leak coming from the engine/transmission & distributor seal. (I add 1 quart about every 3 months.)

Have tried various oil additives that indicate the help in rejuvinate seals, but that has not stop leak.

Has anyone had this work done and what was the cost. Is it possible to do it your self and if so what special equipment will be needed?

If the transmission has to be pulled, should I have the transmission checked out or tuned up? (Transmission does shift hard from 1st to 2nd gear on occassion).

One quart every three months? How many miles on this engine? This is an '86 isn't it? One Quart every three months could be due to consumption if you've got 100k or better. Not bad for oil use, anyway. If you've got puddles on the driveway it's something to take care of. At that age, a few drips is expected. The distributor should be remedied by an o-ring, but don't take my word for it, I've got a Volkswagen engine in my 740(diesel). Rear seals tend to leak over time, don't worry about it till you see more than drips. Anyway, at three months it's time to change the oil.
