AC problem on 1994 960[ALL/1998] posted by JH on

Last summer our air conditioner worked excellent. Very cold air cooled the car in minutes. First hot dat this year only cool(not cold)air comes out. Thermostat never seems satisfied(judging by fan speed.) Brought it to my dealer for service and they said it's working fine...IT'S NOT! They said the pressure was good and it was not low on refridgerant. Slightly cold air comes out the side vents but the middle vents blow only cool air. They said their thermometer gave 38 degrees F at the vent and that was within spec. I made an appiontment with another dealership for June 30. Last year the condenser?(aluminum tank under hood)and pipes leading to it, would be covered with condensation when ac was on. Only one of the smaller pipes is slightly cool now. Today I noticed the compressor clucth was cycling on and off with ac set to max cool. Clucth would engage for about 8 seconds then disengage for about 15 or 20 seconds. It did not piont this out at the dealership as I had not noticed it yet. I'll write again after the next service visit. Any comments or suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks

JH

You need to return to the dealer and lock the service manager in your car on a bright, hot, sunny day. The vent temp differential is a symptom of low refrigerant charge as is the rapid cycling of a/c compressor. If the system was checked when the temp out- side was cool then the technician checking it likely got cold temp out of vents and didn't go any further (he should have and locking his boss in that hot interior with a nonfunctioning a/c system will cause corrective actions for that failure).
