Overheating on '70 B20E engine[ALL/1998] posted by Thilo on

I've encountered a new problem with my P1800E. Everytime when the engine is warming up after a cold start the water temp gauge goes close to the red zone during warm-up and then drops back to normal again. Once the engine is warm the temperature stays normal without overheating. There is also a need to refill some water to the reservoir afterwards. I've replaced the water pump, the thermostat, bleeded and pressurized the system for half an hour at 15psi with warm and cold engine and there is no pressure drop or leakage. The radiator is also o.k. I'm afraid it is a crack in the cylinder head or a faulty head gasket, but I do not want to dismantle everything before I am not 100% sure as there is no other indication for this like white smoke or foam at the dipstick. Has anyone been through this before? Any information is appreciated.
