89 740 A/C compressor[ALL/1998] posted by Eric on

Have a 89 740GL w/ 95K and about 3 weeks ago noticed with my hood up that the A/C compressor was clicking in and out every 10 to 20 secounds, up to this point A/C was working great. Now when I turn the A/C on the compressor doesn't kick in and only hot air. Any Suggestions

What you describe is the result of a loss of refrigerant charge. There is a cycling switch for the compressor that works on pressure and when the refrig. is low the pressure changes rapidly and the switch cycles on-off too fast, when the refrig. gets even lower it will not run at all. Have someone qualified find your leak and it would be wise to have the system retrofitted to R134a refrigerant while the repair is done. The Kit that VOLVO is offering to do this is price-subsidized and contains a drier (accumulator) that needs to be replaced if a system over 2-3 years old is opened for repairs. The kit contains o ring seals that likely are the cause or at least a part of the cause of your leakage.

It might be wise for people thinking of converting from R-12 to another refrigerant to look into several alternatives, not just 134a. If anybody remembers the VHS/Beta wars, it's obvious that sometimes, new "standards" are set by marketing, not technological superiority.

A week ago, I had a car that sprung an A/C leak. It turned out to be just a gasket, so I am still running R-12. But it did prompt me to investigate the matter and my choice, if I'd had to convert at that time, would have been FR-12 (backed by Pennzoil) or AutoFrost (R-406a), mostly in the Eastern US now, but spreading to Western states rapidly. 134a wouldhave been my last choice.

There's a web site called "aircondition.com" which discusses automotive refrigerants. You mgiht want to take a look at some of the discussion there. (I didn't put a link in this message because I've noticed that doesn't make it out of the Brickboard.)

Everybody running R-12 will be faced with this question sooner or later. IMHO, 134a isn't the best choice for everybody.
