Wiring harness deterioration[ALL/1998] posted by Ed Lipe on

I'm new to volvo's but not to diesels. My ,86 740GLE TD has lost an inordinate amount of wire insulation in front of the firewall. Recently my engine temp guage has merged with my hi beams i.e. temp guage zooms when hi beams are switched.I've already d isconnected the temp sensor to determine a harness problem ,but, I'd like to know about where they run together before I start chopping, and the electrical manual is'nt specific enough for me. Any hints

This is common in all the older Volvos. I think where the diagram shows them merging is not of great importance. If you're going to attempt a wiring repair, you need to replace all the affected wires. Get ready to open a can of worms.....a BIG one. The more you tug at the existing wiring, the worse the symptoms can become. A new harness may be the cheapest/easiest way out.

Speaking of opening a big can of worms, get ready to apply for a major LOAN. Talking to the mechanics at my local dealership (Continental Volvo in Virginia Beach), they say a new harness on these mid-80's Volvos can run $400. Plus, if they install it, another $300. I was advised to steer away from mid-80s Volvos by these guys precisely for this reason alone.

I've had very good luck trolling salvage yards for harnesses in the past. Did a complete rewire of an 89 240DL last month and found everything I needed at a yard in NC. SOME soldering was required on the passenger side of the firewall but still cheaper than $700 parts/labor. Below is a link to a company that sells wiring kits.

OK giys, I was just avoiding the inevitable. I'm almost getting used to this, which is not a good thang (I was from the south).First time it happened, it scared the crap out of me. You Know how it is, first the rattling calipers, then the hard shift from first to second in the morning, the fuel sending unit not working. None of this will kill you like an over-heating problem. Good thing the Swedes' use subharnesses. I also noticed a friend's '94 240 had a similar occurance. I knew this had to be a trend. Dealer? Did someone say dealer? That's the place to buy the parts, but not to get the work done. Not stuff like this, anyway. Thanks, time to dig in.....Anybody want to buy a '36 BMW R12 bike?
