'86 740 turbo - swap manual for automatic?[ALL/1998] posted by James on

The overdrive unit on the 4-speed manual transmission on our 740 does not go into overdrive when it is warm/hot without significantly increasing the revs (vacuum?), i.e., flooring it. It will also slip out sometimes if the rpms fall too far (like going around a curve on the highway).
I've gotten some opinions from the Brickboard on the source of the problems and possibly how to remedy it. But, the other day I was thinking that it would certainly be nice to have an automatic transmission in the car. And I was thinking that if I'm going to have to have the overdrive unit rebuilt anyway, maybe I should check into the cost of an automatic transmission from a scrapped car.
Is this even possible? Besides the unit itself, I guess I would have to replace the interior console. I suspect there is probably a lot more to it, like electronics & linkages, but I don't know enough to speculate.
Have any of you folks done this? Is it possible? Estimated costs of parts & labor? Thanks.
