The odometer on my 84 240 started acting erratic about 2 weeks ago ( sticking) yesterday while driving the speedometer just quit. My first thought was the cable, but from some of the other messages I have read the speedometer itself is suspect. Does anyone have any suggestions. The car has 140,000 on it.

As a follow-up to my original message. I removed the speedo and moved the back where the cable attaches and it registered speed. I checked the cable and it was frozen. I remodeved the cable from the transmission and the end fell out. So I solved one problem. A trip to the local NAPA store for a cable, not with housing, put it together and the speed works. The odometer is still sticking . When I reset it to zero on the tripmeter, it will register to.9 mile and then sticks and won't roll over to zero. I read somewhere that there is someonw who rebuilds Volvo speedometers. Does anyone know how to contact him or is there a place to buy a rebuilt or used speedometer. Thanks, Rob

It sounds like you're a DIY type person, if you replaced the drive part of your speedo cable on your own. All you need to do is replace the plastic gear in the speedometer which has cracked and not slides on the steel shaft to which it is mounted, rather than rotates. I ordered VDO speedometer (actually, you need the odometer drive gear) parts from a place in Riverside, CA a LONG time ago (i.e. 10 years). It had United in the title. They would sell you a small bag of these gears for something like $13 for 10 of 'em. I wish I could rmember the place, but it's a very simple job to do yourself. Any Californians near Riverside who can provide illumination on Speedo repair shops? Gilbert; Virginia Beach, VA

Even if you don't want to do it yourself, any of your local speedo repair shops (look them up in the book) should be able to do it, since this is a problem with many VDO odometers (which covers a lot of cars). It would be even cheaper for you if you just bring them the whole cluster yourself.---Brian

Final follow up on my speedometer. I hooked it to a test bench I made from a drill and the broken cable. The odometer is driven form the main input thru a series of worm gears linked to the odometer part of the unit. There is a grey gear that links the milage to the tripmeter and drives both. It appears that when the unit froze, this gear stripped and no longer had the tension to turn over the next mile. I removed the star gears from the top and pulled the milage wheels out. I scored the shaft at the point where the grey gear rests and reinstalled. I used a small pick to score the shaft. I retested and everything works. Thanks to everyone for the ideas and suggestions.

Robert, Think about this, Is the ratio between the speedo gears and od gears the same? Is OD regestering the mileage correctly or is it under/over?
I'm not busting yer cajones over the repair, its a nice save, but I'd still order the gear and fix it proper. Some GOVERNMENT types take a dim view to any Speedo/OD futzing!
