Air Conditioner Upgrade [ALL/1998] posted by Dennis M. Demessianos on

1984 240

Like everybody else with my era Brick, I am pondering the R-12 recharge or the upgrade path. My local Volvo dealer (Barry Pontiac Volvo, Newport, RI) offers the upgrade kit from Volvo for aprx. $ 200.00. The service department has a special upgrade using after- market componets incl. installation and recharge for $ 185.00. Is something rotten here in Newport ? Does any one know of this after market retrofit? NAPA has them for commen domestics, but not for foreign, my local foreign parts dealer hasn't heard anything about it. I would guess the parts alone must run only $ 50.00 or so for the dealer to only charge what it does and inculde installation and recharging. Any body know about this ?

Dennis, The authentic Volvo conversion kit for this car would include a different evaporator, and would cost around $200 for the kit alone. I have a feeling the aftermarket kit includes a drier, quick fill valve and ester oil only. It might work but probably not as well. I'm sure Volvo has a reason for including a new evaporator in their kit. 700s and late model 240s that already have an orfice tube system rather that an expansion valve do not require the evaporator.

Why do you want to switch? Is your system working properly now?

I agree! If it's not broken or the R-12 is not leaking. Leave it alone! I'm in the process of getting a 85' 760 GLE with a 4 cylinder engine and they put in the R-12 for me! The other owner had a 6 cylinder in it and blew the engine. I think R-12 runs and makes the A/C more colder, than the R-134a stuff! You can really feel it when it's a hot day and you are gridlock in city driving traffic!
