765T Cranshaft Pully: How to remove/install?[ALL/1998] posted by Michael McBroom on

I have an '88 765T (B230FT) with auto trans and am wondering what the trick is to removing and installing the crankshaft pully/harmonic balancer on this car? I have an air supply and an impact that is supposedly good for 230 ft lbs, so I should be able to break it loose, but how am I supposed to torque down the new one? I figure that, even if the engine will try to spin, what with the nature of how an impact operates, I should be able to break the bolt free. But tightening it down within torque specs is a different animal.

Problem is, with the auto trans, I don't see an apparent way to lock up the engine so it won't turn. If it were a manual, I'd just put it in gear, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels. Also, if I'm forced to use my impact tool, I'll have to remove the fan, fan shroud, and radiator -- and then hope I have enough clearance to get it down in there. If I can lock the engine somehow, a breaker bar with a cheater pipe should suffice, and I won't have to remove as much stuff.

Ideas? Advice?

The crank holding tool from Volvo is probably in the $75-100 range. I only use it on turbos for the reason you listed. If you know of someone with a "chain wrench", this would work for holding the crank pulley while loosening the bolt. Maybe you could try a tool rental place.

Well, I managed to replace the crankshaft pulley today. I ended up pulling the radiator and the intercooler so I'd have enough clearance for my impact tool. After finally getting it off, I decided that, since I'd gotten this far, I'd go ahead and replace the cam belt while I was at it -- it was still in good shape, but it had been installed about 40,000 miles ago.

I checked the Haynes manual for info on cam belt replacement at this point, and I'll be durned if they didn't have a paragraph on removing the crankshaft pulley. They recommend pulling the starter or the transmission inspection cover and jamming the flywheel ring gear with a large screwdriver or other suitable tool. Too late, I did it the hard way.

Mike, a method I have used successfully is:

Remove a spark plug; Tuen the crank to move the piston to bottom; Stuff a shop towel in the cylinder with a thin screwdriver (of course leaving the end hanging out so you can retrieve it!); Turn the crank and piston back against the rag until the crank stops; Remove the the nut and the the pulley.

Use the same method to torque the nut on reassembly.
