Car: '79 262 Bertone Coupe. Would sincerely appreciate information re:new rack availability & price. Need to replace the whole assembly. Does not appear re-buildable. Dealer does usual song & dance re:supply. Pushed on parts mgr. and his answer was a terse dog & pony show. 'Suggested ...I "get in line for a new C70." Right... Was told by local Seattle parts pro that many of the 262 parts are off the shelf from other, more standard models-tail light lenses, wheel well trims, glass, etc. What about steering racks? I wonder... No one around here seems to know. Thanks JRE

The steering racks are widely interchangeable on all '75-'93 240/260 models. You will find that the hose fittings and steering couplers at the rack end do have have some variations. If you can find a salvage yard (excuse me, that automotive recycler) that you can get the steering rack complete with the u-joint coupler. You might havt have a good parts supplier that has a hose repair capability to replce the rubber section of you p/s pressure hose and fit the end obtained from your use rack. (I should have mentioned getting the rack with coupler and hoses or at least hose ends). As to parts compatablity with your car and other Volvos... most any 240 part will fit your car as far as suspension and "hard" parts. Trim items are usually unique to Bertones>

If a new rack is what you really want, try ipd in Portland. The staff is quite knowledgable and their prices are---OK. I have a '80 262c and most everything is interchangeable with 240 series stuff. Good luck.

Hi Matt: Thanks for the info. Good to hear from another 262c owner. 'Was beginning to feel like an outcast with this car that people keep asking me.."what's that", etc. Go figure.

Don't know what/who "ipd" is. Dealer? Parts? Herb Farm? Junque Yhard? Want to go see'em as soon as someone tells me location of their camp. Will assume they're "friendlies." I'm only 2.5 hrs north of Portland on the Pollack 500.

Also would like to see your 262. Never been closer than 1/4 mile @ 70mph to another 262-and this only once.

Thaks again, Jim Ells

ipd is in portland near the airport. to get there, take I-205 south across the glenn jackson bridge(columbia river) take the airport exit and head east on airport way. go about 4-5 blocks and take a right on ainsworth circle. they are on the right. you can call them at 1-800-444-6473. i don't work for them, but they have been very helpful. a photo of my 262 is framed above the urinal in the men's room. the previous owner put it there. i have been somewhat amazed at the number of 262s i have seen in the last couple of months. i live in vancouver wa, so if you are on your way to ipd maybe we can hook up. let me know.

good morning Matt: Thank you for the additional information. I understand perfectly where IPD is located. Am quite familiar w/the area. Spent a few years with Flightcraft @ PDXintl. Put up with all the construction hassle of the new bridge, extending marine drive, etc., then left the area just before it all came together. Never did have any fun down there.

Understand you're in Vancouver-will give a shout a day or 3 before I go south. Replacing radiator w/4 fat core custom build-up. Olds has tendency to heat up in warm weather/low RPM/ ground speed. Must do this one thing before tripping around too far from home.

Foto of your 262 hanging in john over lizard drain station??? What an honorable location??? Hope it's at least 6 feet up for safety reasons.

Thanks Again

You may also try Northern European Auto Recylclers, Inc. at 206-789-7004. They know Volvos. I have a wreckec '79 265 that I'm pulling parts off of for a '77 242, and may be able to help with engine parts, as I can't use them. Some other stuff may be of use to you that I have. Good luck

Hi Tom: Thanks for the reply. Are you anywhere near this part of the world? I'm currently located in the Bremerton/Silverdale area as this was the cheapest real estate for my business.

My 262 has a 350 Olds/Cad 4 speed in it so I don't think I can take advantage of your parts??? Not sure about this one though. What's a "265"? I'd be interested in looking at what's left over. Still pondering whether to utilize original cruise control or have Tacoma Speedo install newer, more sophisticated after market model. They did a great job of matching the Cad tranny with existing VDO speedometer. Price was so-so, ($217.00) but what were my options?

You may respond, if you wish, directly to me at <interpac@silverlink.net> Thanks again for taking the time to assist me.

Sincerely, Jim Ells
