cd changer question[ALL/1998] posted by Nick Gidakos on

Hi Everybody,
I have a 95 850GLT and I am thinking of putting a cd changer on the factory stereo. It is the SC811 I believe. It has a button for cd and I had asked the Volvo deler when I bought the car and he said that it was about $800. I am not sure if that included installation as well. I was talking to one of the people at my local Circuit City and he told me an Alpine cd changer will work fine since the stereo is made by Alpine(?) as well. I heard though that there were problems with the receiver talking to the changer if it was after market and they are happening off and on at different time intervals(after the warranty expires for the installation etc). Any opinions will be appreciated. BTW I just got my car from the dealership after the replaced the clutch and the the rear rotors under warranty. prevouslly I had the front rotors replaced under warranty as well. I still wonder what happens after warranty(since I have 27.6K miles on the odometer). Any input on the stereo will be appreciated.
TIA
Nick

The factory kit has all the brackets for a very nice installation. I know it is made by Alpine for Volvo. I don't know if this would affect compatibility between their Volvo version and their aftermarket version. I think the $800 quoted is without installation. Is the Volvo version much more expensive than through an independent radio outlet?

Nick, IPD had a CD changer interconnect that you can purchase from them. This connector works for the 850 and 960 models only from 93 to 96.' I do not know if IPD still carries the connectors because it was not listed in their last catalog they sent me! You can purchase the Alpine CHM-S604 for @$350.00 from your nearest Alpine dealer. The connector is # 850CD the price is about $56.00. All the functions are controled by your Volvo unit. By the way the connector is pretty short so, you need to install the Alpine CD changer unit in your passenger front glove box. By the way if you get the Volvo/Apine CD changer it'll cost you @$1,000.00+ installed plus the CD unit!

Good luck!

I think I would double check the price from Volvo. The hardest part of installing the factory accessory CD player is running the DIN cable from the radio to the changer. They are not that difficult.

I have installed the Alpine changer in a 95 850 GLT. You will need an adaptor to go from the radios' DIN connector (about 1/2 inch in diameter) to the CD palyers connector (about 3/4 inch in diameter). You will also need to connect 12V unswitched power to the adaptor (the adaptor end is behind the radio). The unswitched power is so the CD can eject when the ignition is not on. I forget where I tapped the power but it was not hard. The radio pops out by pressing on the two veritcal tabs on either edge of it. When you push these in it causes them to release and they pop out as two handles.
The CD player should come with a long cable to run from the radio to the trunk.
Once you disconnect power to the radio you have to punch the code back in (so make sure you have it).
I got the cable adaptor at a local stereo install place. I see IPD also sells them. Looks like there are two models of adaptor depending on year of the vehicle (IPD has both).
