'83 760 - engine swap (year & model)[ALL/1998] posted by Phlash on

The engine in my 1983 760GLE (auto) is starting to make that clicking sound -- I suspect cam and valve trouble.
Instead of having the engine rebuilt, I have been considering a swap with some other year and/or model (760 or 740). Has anyone done this before or have information or suggestions? What are the considerations for transmissions - will they swap too?
Thanks!

Would be nice to know whether your 760 is a 4 or 6 cylinder. Makes a BIG difference.

This can be swapped over to a four cylinder but it is a relative pain. The exhaust system is different. Most of the fuel injection components are different (including control units and wiring harnesses)and need to be purchased for the exchange. On top of all the motor differences, the suspension is different. Since the B28/280 is a heavier motor, the front springs and shocks are different. The transmission is basically the same except for the bell housing.
I would almost consider a V8 before I would do a 6cyl to 4cyl conversion.

If you are considering a V-8 conversion to your 700 series Volvo there is a conversion manual that you can purchase from the address below:
JTR
P.O. BOX 66.
LIVERMORE, CA 94551 Phone : 510-462-3619 from 9.00a.m. to 4.45 p.m. (P.S.T.) FAX. Line : 510-846-3642. cost @ 44.95 + 3.50 S/H.
The V-8 engine conversion is not an easy task! It's not cheap either! I have a manual for the 200 series conversion so, I've read through the book!
The 85' 760 GLE had a 6 banger in it and has a 4 cylinder Volvo B-23 engine put in it. The guys at the shop said that there were still vibrations they still need to attend to! I'll get the car on the road in Sept. I'm hoping because she still needs bodywork and a new paint job!

If I were to stay with a six-cylinder, is there a better year than '83 that will swap. I have heard that there were some serious oil delivery problems with the engine for my year. Would an '89 or newer work better?
If not, .....Does anyone want to buy an '83GLE??????????
