How I Solved The "Check Engine Light" Problem[ALL/1998] posted by Tony Zee on

As some of you may remember, my friendly neighborhood gas station attendent failed to screw my gas cap on completely, causing the diagnostic system to think there was a leak in the tank thereby causing the "Check Engine" light to come on.

After trying various suggestions (from a multitude of sources, including the service manager at my dealership) such as driving the car for 20 mins at mixed speeds, hwy/city/idle, etc., running the tank down to empty, and so on and so forth, I decided to simply disconnect the battery. This caused the computer to reset and the dreaded idiot light did finally go off.

So there it is. Now, I wonder if this would work also to turn off the service interval light that everyone seems to complain about......

Just one question. Why did the dealer not turn the light off?

The dealer offered to turn it off but I could not find the time to drive 35 mins. each way.
