Bulb Out Indicator On ... No Bulbs Out![ALL/1998] posted by Henry T. Mui. on

On my 84'240GL, the bulb out warning lights came on a stayed on! I checked the headlights, brake lights, licence lights and the amber side marker lights seem to be all working! I also noticed that the bulb failure light only came on when I turned the headlights on but not when the light switch was in the middle position. I'm guessing that I may have a short with the L or R headlight connection or that the bulb warning sensor is at fault! Has anyone had this happened? By the way while driving over a few bumps on the road the light would go off but, would come back on!

The bulb failure sensor works on the low beams, tail lamps, and stop lamps. Since it comes on when headlamps are on, not just tail lamps or stop lamps this would indicate a problem w/ low beams. The fact that it is affected by bumps points to a loose ground or faulty connection on the low beams. Stand back when it is dark with the low beams on and see if you can determine if there is even a faint difference in the light intensity in the two sides and carefully check the side that appears dimmer. Bulb failure sensors can and do fail, so that is certainly a possibility if nothing else seems to be out of line.

I had a similar problem with my '88 244DL (actually there were other strange electrical occurrances, too). The problem was a loose ground - the one near the right front fender. It was behind the washer fluid bottle on my car. Tightening the screw solved all these problems.

You might want to inspect the wiring at the headlight relay. Seems like I've seen a few with some rough looking wires where they plug into the relay. Should be on the left side near the battery along the edge of the hood. Operate the high beams and listen for the "click".

I've solved the problem with the bulb out indicator! It seems that the driver's side low beam was ready to burn out! Strange because I had checked all the lights that the bulb out senor is wired up to three times. But all the lights were in working order! The fouth time I checked the lighting system I noticed that the left hand side low beams were out! So, I replaced it with a spare I carry in the trunk of my car and started the car! The bulb indicator light went off! I drove the car the whole day with the low beams on. So far no bulb out indicator light went on! Thanks to you all for the advice!

Henry

Hi I just thought I would throw this in. My 83 244 GL had an intermittent bulb out indicated. It turned out to be the left stop light and the bulb had a broken filament that worked intermittently. I'm glad I didn't get a ticket for it, the indicator would go out when you slammed a door.
