hi folks,
trouble again! When the car is started in the morning, the engine rpm is about 1500 rpm. as the engine warms up the rpm falls to normal - but when in Park the rpm dips a little and there is surge( I think that is the term) in the engine and rpm is back to normal, this happens every 20 seconds or so. Took it to the dealer who cleaned the throttle body etc. and said that some adjustment (don't know which) was off. Drove back the car, the high rpm in cold start seems to have disappeared but the engine still surges in park. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Will be back to the dealer when time permits. Shobhan

hi paul,
It's alright about the name! The motor has had a tune up .There is some white smoke involved but that is related to some coolant leaking into the engine or is that the cause of the problem. The cost of getting that one fixed has made me put off the repairs for a while. regards

Really can't expect it to perform normally with known problems, especially something like a blown head gasket.
Does the "surge" correspond with the air conditioning compressor starting and stopping? Does it do this with the a/c turned off?
If you could check oxygen sensor voltage, that may give a good clue as to what is going on with the fuel/intake system.

Dear Siobhan : if i read your last mewsssage corectly, about thinking you have a coolant leak; if you have a coolant leak ino the block you are officially "in the deep weeds "
There are a couple of easy and inexpevsive ways to tell if you are swapping fluids under pressure.:A. when you pull the dipstrick is the stuff on it frothy, and smells ugly, then drain the oil if it looks sort of like molasses. well whipped you have a blown head gasket
B. either buy a radiator , pressure tester, rent one or bat your green irish eyes and ask a radiatord shop to pressure test ypur radiator ,explain your problem, , and if the rasdiator won"t hold pressure voila you are at the headgasket place again. If there is somewherearound where you live that will swap heads,if you have a coup
le of friends (that is carry your refrigerator friends ). Buy a gasket kit from (and a good gasket kit ,cheap gaskets aren't worth the money usually ) it's a sort of tough, but mostly a pain in the but, a lot of stuff gets moved or deleted, temporarily You can also do a compresion test to confirm your worst fears.but a well done valve job will last a long time.
Keep your stick on the ice

folks,
what's worse than a blown head gasket - a cracked head! well I am lucky - it's only a blown head gasket. Going ahead to get that fixed next week. Should have smooth running engine once more - summer has just begun - a lot of driving to do. will keep you guys posted. thanks
