91 940 Turbo Transmission[ALL/1998] posted by Dan Trickel on

I purchased a 91 940 Turbo in great condition. There are a few minor problems and at 112,000 that is to be expected. The biggest of the problems is the transmission seems to shift at much higher RPM's than my 740 GLE. Under normal driving conditions it is not uncomon for the transmission to shift @ 4500 or 5000 RPM's. The only way to get it to shift at lower RPM's is to accelerate and @ 3500 let off the gas until the thing shifts. Is this an indication of a bigger problem or is it something that can be easily adjusted?

Congrats on the 940! I'm sure you'll love it!

There is a cable which is attached to the throttle (the kickdown cable) that tells the transmission how far the driver is pushing down on the gas pedal. This opens and closes the throttle valve in the transmission. The shift points are determined by the position of this valve/cable. The tighter the cable is pulled, the further the valve opens, the higher the rpm the transmission shifts at.

This cable runs up from the trans on the passenger side and comes up behind the cylinder head and attaches to the throttle linkage. This cable should have just a touch of slack in it. In other words, the throttle valve should not be held open by the cable in the idle position (closed throttle). The effective cable length can be adjusted at the throttle end. Pulling the outer housing back tightens the cable, adjusting it forward loosens it. It should be adjusted to where there is almost no freeplay in the inner cable.

It is common for the outer housing to get pulled out of the threaded fitting at the throttle end, thus tightening the cable to the point it shifts at an abnormally high rpm.

Hope this helps.
