"CHECK ENGINE" Light[ALL/1998] posted by Tony Zee on

At 1530 miles, the "Check Engine" light just came on in my S70. After reading the manual, I checked the fuel cap and sure enough it was not on tight. (The manual suggests that if such is the case this might cause the emissions diagnostics to malfunction.

Is there any way this light can be reset, or do I have to drive an hour to the dealer? Seems like a stupid design.

As always, any and all comments are greatly appreciated.

Best regards,

This problem can affect 96 and later 850 non-turbo, 97 850 GLT, and all 98 and future S/V70's. All of these models have fuel systems that comply with an EPA/CALIF. requirement that fuel vapor loss be detectable and reported in the form of a "CHECK ENGINE" lamp. The light will go out on its own, but it will take a few days. It can also be turned on by a few instances of fueling with engine running. Volvos only contribution to this problem is their installation of this feature on more models than is currently mandated (it is a phase in on increasing % of cars made until 2000, when all cars and trucks produced must have this) Look out, your charcoal lighter fluid and spray paints and a few other things that release vapors are on the list to get attention.

Thank you Abe for such a quick and concise response. I feel much better now, especially knowing the purpose of the design and that it will go away on its own.

Very best regards,
