I HAVE RECENTLY NOTICED A LARGE AMOUNT OF OIL LEAKING FROM THE BACK OF THE ENGINE, THIS IS NOT A SMALL LEAK, BUT ALMOST A STEADY STREAM WHEN OIL IS HOT. MY QUESTION IS A TWO PARTER: 1. COULD THIS BE FROM MY REAR MAIN SEAL? 2. IS THERE ANYWHERE ON THE NET I COULD GET A REPAIR MANUAL TO FIX THIS MYSELF? THE CAR IS A 1986 VOLVO 740 TURBO WAGON 4-CYLINDER AND FUEL INJECTION, WITH AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION.
ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED!!

dear allen, there are boooks available Haynes has ok manuals (and they have a website w/a q&a e. mail I am thinking if you are at a loss about books ,do you have tools, jacks, and a space to work in.
If this is a rear main seal nad thias is your first major repair; you are in for a project; the trans comes out, and there is the culprit. six or so bolts ( this old cars, I,ve only owned upto 78's )if you have amanual it is a pain, even with air tools. if you have an automatic I would suggest buying the book doing a parts and tools cost inventory (and take a three day weekend if this is your first and you don't have any experienced help) and then fins a good trand shop and ask them what they would charge to do it. If you are boud and determined to do this. make sure it is the rear main seal and not the turbo cooler. or something simple.
Give it a good look organize your effort get some hrlp, and let us know what you wan to do.

I liked the haynes manual. but I also got the thick chilton and bentley 240 manual from ipd.
had to take down the transmission twice. it seemed to leaks the first time because I failed to notice that there was a groove in the flywheel where the seal touches. anyways, the haynes manual tells you to look for a grovve in the flywheel, and if there is one, don't place the near rear seal lip over it.
anyways, some thing you might want if you try to do replace the seal. 1. a transmission jack or transmission jack adaptor.
I can't imagine balancing the heavy tranmission on a piece of wood and a jack.
You have to really enjoy juggling to do that.
Harbor freight tools has one for $50. It's kind of cheesy, but it eventually gets the job done.
2. don't stretch those OD wires attached to the shift knob.
3. nice to have at least 3 jacks. 1 jack for engine, 1 jack for transmission jack adaptor, 1 jack for when the transmission starts slipping down the jack adaptor.
4. maybe a new clutch set. with release bearings.
maybe a new pilot bearing. maybe get that pilot bearing tool from harbor freight for $15.
If not, then you'll have to use a hammer puller and jack the car way up to enable you to move the transmission back far enough.
5. loctite. loctite the flywheel bolts
don't leave you jack supporting the engine over night, or for very long. I think the haynes manual says to place a 2x4 between the back of the engine and the back firewall. (probably some small pieces.
the second time I did it, I had a piece of wood from the ground to the engine (still had the floor jack there too).and
better keep track of all those nuts and bolts with some baggies
also need some jack stands. I used a couple pairs. used the 6 ton ones to lift the car way up.

I once had a 1961 544 with a B16B engine that leaked like yours and then got worse. If I started the engine at all, the entire contents of the crankcase would end up on the ground within a couple minutes. There is a "freeze plug" that covers the end of the camshaft behind the flywheel. It had fallen out. There was nothing left to contain the oil that was used to lubricate the aft bearing on the cam. I found the freeze plug in the bottom of the bell housing. I had to pull the engine and remove the flywheel to replace the freeze plug (which took all of about 15 secends). I probably didn't HAVE to pull the engine to repair the problem, but decided to replace all the oil seals while I was at it.
