uh-oh! my 1980 262c with a transplanted B21 has decided to get stubborn on me. Symptoms are as follows--The car performed vey nicely for monthe--40K on the engine, then it decided not to starrt. turned over, but would not fire. I thought it might be vacuum related and inspected the rubber hoses on the in take manifold and found a crispy one. Replaced it and the car started up fine. Next day it decides to get balky again. caranked it a few times, then let it sit for 25 minutes thinking that it might be temperature related (85-90 deg. outside) Car started up and ran fine. Replaced the fuel filter just in case. Today I drove the car about 20 miles, parked it for 20 minutes and it won't fire. Turns over ok, bu no go. Swapped fuel pumps after noting that no fuel was coming out of the new fuel filter while the engine cranked still no go. Any suggestions?

Fuel pump relay. That green box up under the dash. On my 1980 GLE, which I dropped a B21 into, it is located right above your legs, driver side, in the jumble of wires behind the instrument cluster. Has either 9 or 12 tabs on the bottom. This little sucker had me going for many a moon after I rebuilt the B21 and was trying to get the car running again.

Matt: Ditto on what Gilbert says. Intermittent in-line splice to this little varmint made me crazy. What about the possibility of the in-tank filter going to mush? Is there such an animal in the 262's. Originally, fuel odors inside the car while driving prompted a new gasket at the tank. Not knowing how old the thing was, I had the whole mess replaced as I'm not in the mood for any surprises while cruising the Norwegian 500 to Medford in 100 degree heat.
Good Luck, JRE

OK, I went down to John's Import and paid the man $10 for a fuel pump relay that must have been working when the car it was in got whacked. I put it in and still no dice. Are there any other relays that might affect the fuel system? I definitely have spark, but the fuel pump doesn't want to produce. The in-tank pump was replaced about three months ago, so it should be ok. I am a bit concerned about the wiring--0 the transplant of the B21 seems to have a lot of the 6 cyl. wirng haness left in the car. Any thoughts are GREATLY appreciated.

Morning Matt-Never mind, I know how it's going. A couple of things here-you said the in-tank is 3 months old, or there abouts? Is it delivering fuel? yes__no__maybe__. How about its connections? I don't see any report of you having hard wired around potential sources of failure to the front pump for a go/no go test. These things I would have done immediately befoire moving on.

Matt, Relay's OK, tank pump OK, check the ground at the main pump, the fuel line going to the fuel accumulator (kinked/blocked), you changed the filter right?, also slide under and LISTEN/FEEL for man pump coming on and if its REAL noisy the outflow line may be blocked.

I'll check my manuals and see what I can find.....

Well I ran power to the main fuel pump and it spits out gas. I think my problem is electrical. I have just begun to trace down the wiring with my handy dandy wiring schematic. There are two 1"x1"x1" relays mounted on the driver's side fender well. I believe one is the cooling fan relay-- could the other one be a relay for the injection pump? I really do appreciate you input as this is FRUSTRATING.

There is an adjustment on electronic speedometers described in Automotive Repair Manual for 240 series and probably also for 740 edition. I had mine adjusted for $75.00 because I don't have a clue. Mine was studk when first starting the car and something was too tight. Yours may be too loose. Hope this helps.

Sorry. I posted to the wrong message. I believe the solution to your difficulty could be something simple. Try inspecting every inch of your ignition coil wire for a flaw and possible arcing. Also, clean and tighten wire conntections at the coil and check the plug on the electronic ignition control unit (the black box) located usually at eh right front under the hood. I had intermittent loss of fuel pump function while driving and my husband also had total failure. These things helped us both. Thands to dheld@wyoming.com (Deja news) Good luck.

AHAA!!! I just got the beast back from the shop. The problem turns out to be a loose wire connection between the distributor and the ignition module. So, I get lucky with only a two hour shop time charge. Thank God for honest mechanics. Thanks to all for your input.
