Lumbar Support[ALL/1998] posted by Mark Erickson on

The drivers seat on my 83 240DL has an adjustable Lumbar support
which doesn't work.. The passenger side one works fine, when you turn the
knob on the drivers seat nothing happens. Anybody know how to fix this?
other than just getting a new seat out of a junk yard?

Lumbar repair kits are available from Volvo as well as IPD and not overly
expensive. Repair can be done without removing the seat. Undo the dog clips
at the bottom of the seat back and peel up the seat cover to expose the lumbar
support. The cup/clip/spring adjustable lumbar support design on the 240's
seems to fail faster than the design on the old 120's and 140's which was
basically just a rubber belt.

I have seats from an '82 244 in my 122. I've fixed the lumbar support a few times. What usually breaks is one of the U-shaped wires that go through the frame of the seat and hold the plastic lumbar support. The 2 U-shaped wires are held together by two hefty springs. I always get the wires at my local self-serve junkyard...get them out of a passenger seat and they might last longer. On the other hand, buy them new if you don't want to do it for a while. Once you get in the back seat and get the upholstery up on the front seat, you'll see everything. It'll be easy to get the old one off. Use vise grips to get the springs on the new wire and you're set. Use nylon ties to hold the bottom of the seat upholstery together. You won't need to see your chiropractor as often after you fix this. ---Brian T.
