I own a 1989 740GL. Recently I noticed a strong gas/exhaust odor both inside and outside of the car. Also, when the car is cold it starts by a turn of the key and seems to idle fine, however once the engine has warmed up it begins to idle very poorly (if the gas pedal is not depressed continuously the engine will die). There is also some faint but visible black type smoke coming from the exhaust pipe. Any ideas?

Could be any number of injection control devices causing this. Most likely? Maybe the coolant temp sensor located under #3 intake runner. Maybe the oxygen sensor. Maybe the air mass meter but that normally won't give that symptom when they fail.

Or most likely the cables to the airmassmeter
