1970 1800E - back on track...[ALL/1998] posted by Chita on

What is this sticky black greasy feeling coating all over the original wheels? They have been derusted (not bad at all) but in the midst of this, I noticed all the spot welds had slightly rusted everywhere the coating had broken. Also, one of the medallions in the center has begun to bubble up or something, feels rough. It looks as if it's attached with a little phillips screw. Who makes replacements? (Surely not Volvo, not when they can make you buy a new wheel.) Or do I cast duplicates from one of the good ones and nickel plate the whole thing? Chrome seems too flashy and stainless is too expensive.
They go to the wheel shop tomorrow to make sure they're round and straight. Is there a special paint for wheels or should I just go ahead with normal metal painting techniques?
Oh - I'm also looking for an entire brake system, from master cylinder to bleeder valves and everything in between. They don't appear croaked, but I'd like to have a spare. I'm quite unhappy with the one-rust-uber-alles that happened to the rotor and all associated parts. They get one chance to revive with muriatic TLC tomorrow, that's it. One mil out of spec after machining and they get to retire as High Tech nostalgia pieces on the shop walls or something.
Exhaust is being replaced with a custom stainless. Any ideas about mufflers? The fabricator says it looks run of the mill, he could stick on just about anything off the shelf. He wants to make it go vroom-vroom. I prefer purrrrr. The old exhaust cleaned up fine, but I've decided I don't ever want to do this again and I've adopted the Stainless creed bigtime.

Jim N., I am not sure of the final price for the stainless exhaust. It hasn't been installed yet. I want the same person to do the entire job, in case I have some questions later on. Figure it'll go $5-600. I remember being unhappy with the hangers, so a little extra fiddling will come up at installation.
One of the ironies I saw right away when I took the car out of storage: the pristine stainless hose clamps were all held on by rusty cheap screws. I really don't know why Volvo did that. They'll all be replaced as I get around to it.
Another odd thing: I hadn't realized the wheels (1970 1800E) were half/half steel and magnesium alloy. It's two halves spot welded together. I don't know that I'd buy wheels like that off the shelf. This car might end up with Ranger wheels yet.
I like the tires more than the wheels, so if there's any conflict - the wheels go. This car is meant to drive, not collect.

!800E wheels are also the heaviest I've ever lifted for their size. I think they must be half steel/half LEAD alloy.
