Door "Spring"[ALL/1998] posted by Peter Bins on

I have an '87 Volvo 240 DL Wagon. I have a broken door "spring". Let me describe what this spring looks like and what it does. I need to know how to remove it so I can replace it. If anybody knows what this spring is called that would be nice so I can talk intelligently about it when I try to mail order one.
SPRING LOCATION
Each of the four doors on the car has one of these springs. My broken one happens to be on the driver's door. The spring is located on the lower hinge mechanism of each door.
SPRING FUNCTION
This C-shaped spring prevents the door from opening unchecked when you push it open. My driver-side door now swings full open when I push on it... because this spring sheared off one sunny day launching itself into low earth orbit.
HELP!
If anyone knows how to remove this door spring please let me know. My guess is that there may be a bolt under the circuit breaker which holds the door spring and door hinge onto the car. Just a guess. If anyone can confirm, I will take my trusty ratchet and have at it. If I can't find any help, I'll have at it with my trusty blow torch.

If you remove the drivers side lick panel and the fuse box cover there should be 2 or 3 bolts/nuts that hold the hinge in place.
Put a block or support under the door before you attempt to remove the hinge as the top will frequently pull out of alignment when it has to assume ALL the weight of the door. Also try and stop the door from twisting as well.
Upon replacement of the door spring, don't be afraid to torque up on the bolts or they will loosedn up real fast!

Thanks for the input!
What is a lick panel? Is it the fiber board material behind the plastic panel?
And do you know how better to describe the door spring?

Kick Panel, the plasitc panel covering the left side of the drivers footwell. (Sorry my keyboard sticks sometimes).
I am checking Haynes and it says the "Door Stop" is held on to the door by two external screws (visible) and one internal screw holds the assembly to the pillar. It looks like the stop/spring is at the top of the door below the upper hinge.
Try B&D Parts for a spare or Volvo.

I thought ther door check spring was manufactured as part of the hinge assembly. I don't think it can be removed from the hinge.

Just replace the "lower hinge". The spring isn't replacable, although I'm sure someone will try to save the 10 bucks in an attempt to do this. Get a new hinge, it'll come gray ready for paint. I like to take off the striker on the body to make sure the door is absolutely straight to the body after replacement. This will stop the metalic ping or striker wear associated with a misadjusted/worn hinge.
