Noisy Turming Wheel on My 740 [ALL/1998] posted by Holger Ericsson on

Hi I have a problem with my 1990 740 that I cannot figure out. After a long car trip I noticed a clicking/slight scraping noise coming from under my right front tire. I put the car in neutral and revved the engine to see if it was coming from under the hood. There was no noise. I noticed that whenever the tire rotates the noise comes back. The next day I took my car to the Volvo Dealer(In my opinion they are lousy). After $50.00 they said that my after market brakes did not fit exactly and that they were making the noise. I was told it was harmless and to live with it. Today I dove my car for 1 hour to an outlet mall. Upon arriving I again noticed the noise. Now it was loud, like a large nail in the tire. I inspected all four tires thoroughly to make sure no rocks or debris was in them. While driving back I noticed the noise. It would quiet down to a slight hush, scraping noise then return at intervals. Usually the change in noise happed after a traffic light or slow down. When I got back I went into a restaurant for an hour. Upon returning the car made no noise for the 5 min ride back home. I thought it might still be the brakes and the pads might further deform from the expansion from heat. I am also suspect that my rotors may be bad. I really could use your expert opinion or ideas. I intend to take this car to the repair shop on Monday, but would also appreciate any suggestions to offer the mechanic. I should add I have noticed no change in brake performance or pulling on my car.

I'm betting on a warped rotor. If you drag the brakes lightly at low speed the noise will change or go away. The problem will be most noticeable when the rotor is hot after a long drive (warpage caused by expansion is at its maximum).
One thing you can try is to thoroughly degrease the rotors, just in case you've got a drop of road oil that's causing a slick area to heat differently and cause an otherwise nearly true rotor to warp.
Check to make sure that any balancing weights on the rims aren't capable of touching any brake lines or such (as you probably don't have a hoist in your garage, you'll need to keep a load on the suspension so jack up the wheel, not the frame, to check this -safety first though).

Our 740 made a similiar noise that had me convinced it had a serious problem....turned out to be a loose hubcap...took it off and spread the clips slightly...cured it....
I was surprised and relieved with a cheap fix..

My 90 245 w/71k has been making this strange sound from the front left wheel just as you describe: this scraping sound began after I replaced my snows(!) tires with the 5 star turbos & now, seez what is this noise? Is it the wheel bearings? the new rebuilt calipers? the crossed drilled bremblos? Sound is more noticble during breaking. Pads? Any other thoughts whould help. Thanks

JJJ, Did belly pan fall off or get knocked off? Take a look at boots and such for impact damage, esp. AC Condenser/radiator. Could save ya a lot of misery when you need it the least!
