AC compressor noisy. bad clutch?[ALL/1998] posted by bn on

I have a noisy AC compressor.
Before:
AC compressor would make noise only when AC on.
Now:
AC compressor makes noise all the time (like a bad bearing sound)
and the AC doesn't work.
----------------------------------------------------
Someone I asked told me that it is probably the AC clutch.
Could someone give me a general idea of what is involvoed in replacing this clutch.
Are there any good books covering repair of volvo AC compressors.
Is it better to change the clutch or just get a new compressor?
thanks

Well, bn, ya got a few choices. First have you confirmed, visually, that the clutch is'nt working?
OKAY: If you want to switch to R134a NOW is he time, cause yer gonna kiss goodbye all the R-12 inside yours when you remove the compressor! So decide.
I recommend pricing a rebuilt unit and ask if they can swap an oldie for a 134a type and then see what else needs replacing. That way you only have to futz with it once. ost of the mech. stuff is easy, just get the pros to drain the system-a local shop here in NY will save your r12 and put it back after service. They claim to "filter" it while reclaiming it.
If I was you I'd replace w/ a rebuilt Yorx 134a unit, they seem to last longer/stronger than Sanyo units.

You could replace just the clutch but if the front seal of the compressor gets too hot, it can begin to leak. This seal (depending on which compressor you have) can be replaced but the success ratio is marginal at best even for experienced mechanics with the proper tools.
Your best bet is, as Stoney said, start compressor shopping.

You should also replace the rubber grommets that cushion the
compressor in its mounting bracket along with a new belt.
