1981 262C PS rack swap[ALL/1998] posted by Paul Seminara on

Folks,

All points bulletin help!!!

I was sailing along with my steering rack swap (the old one was really gone) and suddenly I've hit a BIG snag.

I've got the old one out, it is a Cam Type 2. The replacement is a Cam Type 3. It should fit....well it does mechanically.....but not hydraulically.

Let me explain: The 1981 262C has the high pressure oil line from the PS pump make a big loop to the right side of the car then under the steering rack then back up to the steering gear. This is where the problem is: The mating fluid connector does not even come close. This connector and line is Volvo made plumbing jig with a large hollow bolt fitting on the pump and a smaller one on the steering gear side. Where the rigid pipe with fittings meet the rubber hose are factory crimp clamps. The pump is maybe 10" from the steering gear.

I'm really stuck.

Has anyone encountered this before?

What can I do?

What side of the car is the 240 series PS pump on? What kind of fittings? Will this work?

Are there people/companies that make/do these hollow bolt fittings? I would be nice to rig my own.

Can I use the line from an earlier 260?

HELP!!!!!

Paul, grab the yellow pages and a polaroid camera, take pix of both sides and pipes/fittings. If ya can remove one, better. Look up Hyraulic equipment servic companies and also under hoses/belts and call em and describe the problem. Most hydraulic service co's. can make up adapters and hoses to order for construction equipment, backhoes, dozers, etc, why not Volvo power racks?

Same kinda place redid all my AC hoses for under $100

Give it a shot.

Stoney is right. Hydraulic shops have zillions of fittings. They also have the ability to mate SAE/Metric OEM assemblies of all kinds. I've never failed to get what I needed at my hose guy's place.
Another alternative is to call Millisa at RPR in Albany, CA. (Bay Area). I just this week purchased a rack for my 262C. Millisa insisted I purchase an additional hose in case I ran into the problem you've inherited. It's so common, she insisted. If not needed-send it back. They refund your $$$. Check out their site Tel:800.818.6586. Good luck. JRE
