77 242 auto trans transplant[ALL/1998] posted by Tom Brittain on

My '77 242 automatic trans slips horibly when starting out in first under power. Along with the slipping is some nasty clunking of the trans that may have been responsible for the premature demise of the motor and trans mounts. transmission repairable? If so, where do I get a manual? The Hanes books say it needs to be done by the pros. Boo-Hiss!!! If not repairable, I have a '79 265 junker with an automatic. How difficult is it to swap transmissions? Are there parts that will not swap?
Thanks,
Tom

You would have to swap the bell housing and I know there are different torque convertors but I don't know how to identify the differences. I know the distance the end extends into the pump can vary enough for them to not be interchangeable but you may be able to use the 265 torque convertor with the 242 bellhousing.
Don't know about gear ratios either.

Is a home rebuild of my present automatic trans a realistic possibility? If so, where would I get parts and a manual? Are there some diagnostics that should be gone through to determine what needs to be replaced?

As a mechanic who's never dabbled in automatics, I must say that although the trans you have is relatively simple by today's standards, there are still more little springs, clips, pawls and levers in there than you can possibly imagine. Unless you don't mind re-doing it yourself 2 or 3 times to get it right, leave it to the pro's. At least that's what I would do. ---Brian T.
