Leety teeny springy ring in B230 head[ALL/1998] posted by Michael McBroom on

As you might have guessed, I have no idea what it's called :) I have the head off my '87 B230FT at the moment, and noticed this little flat circular band that was stuck down in an oil passageway after getting the head hot-tanked. I suspect it fits into the head or the block and is meant to protrude slightly as another means of keeping the head centered when installing it (there are alread two protruding pieces already -- one on each end of the block)?

I'm wondering not only if this is what it's for, but if there are others besides the one I discovered that may have fallen out?

That little round thing could be: 1) a valve spring washer that fits under
spring if it's approx. 1 1/8 in. dia. 2) a seal washer that was stuck to
head from some sensor you removed 3) [most likely answer] a part from
something else that occupied the tank before your head was placed in it and
was washed into your head while solvent was circulating.
Can you describe it in better detail? Dimensions, thickness, etc.

Of your three suggestions, only #3 is even remotely plausible. But this thing was wedged up in a hole pretty far -- an oil gallery hole leading from the block to the head. A picture truly is worth a thousand words, but let me attempt to describe it a little better.

You know the small hose clamps that are made from metal bands? They have two ouside parts that overlap an inside part, each one turned up at the end? Well, this piece looks *vaguely* like that. It's bigger though -- about 1/2" diameter or so. It's made so that, where the ends of the band overlap, they are eached notched, so that when compressed they fit like this:

Yuck! I forgot this thing is html driven, where one space is the same length as one hundred spaces.

Lessee...

Hope that works. Ignore the dots.

This little thing is for centering the head and headgasket when they are assmbling the engine.
There should be two pices one in each end of the block sometimes it get stuck in the cylhead but when You are assebling the engine, install it in the block
