Jarrod,

You mentioned in the past that you were getting ready to replace/repair your differential. Well, I've yet another "issue" with my '73 142. Seems when I'm engaging either reverse or drive on my 3 speed automatic, the differential bangs into attention. This is a new one for the car. I can add it to the other "things" I'm currently replacing or repairing.

I look on the positive side, the car will be NEW when I'm done!

Any info helpful...and any 12-step programs for 142 owners too!

Should I be thinking of a new rear end for the car...or repairing the one I've got?

Craig

I have heard that it is real hard to do work on the rear end. If you choose not to replace everything but what is broken, you will find yourself with a chisel to break these odd collars and on and on (see Manual). What I have is the whole rear end, axel and all.

I bought a car to strip for parts and the entire rear axel and components was one thing that I claimed before the crusher ate it. This was a huge job as it was. I never worked so hard on a car. Everything was seized and so forth, so I am not looking forward to removing the vehicle that will receive the donated organs.

Anyway, do you live near Minneapolis? You may be in luck. I am this close -><- to abandoning my 142 and this will free up many parts.

I'll keep you posted. I hate to even think about this stuff, but I am approaching a severe case of diminishing returns. I am losing favor with the girlfriend's parents every day that the beast lays at rest. I am going over to try again later this afternoon.

If anyone has a good set of SU carbs to sell, let me know. This may save my dear car. I will be calling that guy in Kanaranzi after I am off the line.

Also, does anyone have expert advice on SUs? I know them fairly well, I think mine are just too far gone; BUT if you have any advice to offer....

Craig, People who take differentials apart are a hermit-like group of grubby men who give out nudie calendars at Xmas time. In other words, it's a specialized field. Plus if you need ring or pinion gears it can get really expensive. In 14 years I've had 2 diffs go bad in my 122. Last time I just drove it until the "whirring" got so loud I couldn't hear the radio without turning it up so high it distorted. Then I got another one (the entire rear axle assembly) at the local self-service junk yard for $35. They didn't even charge extra for all the brake drums and hardware I left on it. That car almost fell over and crushed me and it was still worth it. After 3 years it still works fine...no rear end or bearing noise at all. Maybe I got lucky. What I'm getting at is that if it's really bad, either replace it with a used one or get it professionally done at a rear end specialist. ---Brian T.

If at all possible, buy another diff. The used variety is usually the preference.Take this advice from a grubby, old, hermit-like old fart like me, who enjoys this kind of stuff.
