Resetting service light using the OBD-II port[ALL/1998] posted by Leo Montreuil on
Wednesday, 23 July 1997, at 12:27 p.m.

On 1996 and later models, the only way to service the service light is thru the OBD-II port. I contacted the maker of OBDTool and OBDscan (http://www.carcomp.com/prod02.html). They told me their software can reset the malfunction light but not the service light. They should be able to upgrade their product if the command go thru the ISO-9141 pins and I can get them the code.
Is there someone that know the code (HEX) that is sent to reset the light? Is it going thru the pins for the ISO-9141 communication or thru other manufacturer reserved pins on the OBD-II connector?
I contacted VOLVO customer service USA and I was not able to get any usefull information.
The Volvo litterature dept. (
http://www.execpc.com/~kcc/litcat/models/1997850.html) has books about the Volvo Scan tool and the Motronic Engine Management, is there any information regarding this subject in these books?

Thank you

Leo Montreuil

Leo;

Please check on the "Brick Board" Search/Personalize Display section. Use the words "850 Reset Service Light" about a few months ago there was a posting by a fellow Brickboad member who suggest that there was a way to reset the service light without you going to the dealer.

Good luck!

The '96 and later cars require a special tool to reset the light.

There's a reset tool for the obd-II cars on the market. My shop has one as an alternative to tying up the VST(Volvo System Tester). When I see the thing around I'll note it's make and post it.

If you have your 1996-7 850 in for service, the system tester
can be used to program the frequency of it's activation.
The combi instrument cluster will set for 5000, 7500, or 10,000
mile interval, plus 6 or 12 months, plus several settings for
hours of operation.
If you have a preferance, you can ask your tech to change it.
Some clusters, which are manually reset, cannot be changed.

I can get an OBD-II scan tool that connect to the serial port of a Laptop computer. I will like to reset the service light but this command seems to be a Volvo specific instead of a generic one.
Is there a place (document, books, etc) where the command are described such they can entered on a generic OBD-II scan tools in manual mode? Is it in the Volvo Scan Tools booklet?

I've heard of Windows programs to monitor some of the OBD-II functions. I know that none available at this time can reset the service light. I bought one of the generic reset tools and paid $270 for it. It is made by AST. This was right before Volvo came out with their reset tool for about the same price (NOT retail). The AST reset tool will NOT reset the light in a 70 series car. The Volvo tool will.

The reset tool your are talking about only works for 850's from 96-97'.
But, the newer Volvos do require a windows type of a program.
The program can turn off (reset)the service light But, in order to do this
the company that makes this program requires you to know the code to turn
the service light off! This code is only known by Volvo service guys.

I hope to have the codes in a few days or whenever I visit my local Volvo
dealer!

Ummmm, I have never heard of this before. You don't use a windows type program to reset any lights. The only thing pertaining to codes is on the '98 model cars there are codes to change functions of the car like alarm, lock, and instruments. You can change the parameters which turn the service light on, but you still need the special tool to reset the light.

I talked with John Grable from CarComp Inc. (http://www.carcomp.com/index.html). They makes two products that works on a Laptop, OBDTool and OBD2SCAN. He told me that his product cannot reset the Volvo service light. In his software, he implemented the codes as defined in J1850 standard from SAE. The Volvo 850 service light is probably using a separate pin in the OBD-II connector, a different protocol or a manufacturer specific PID in the OBD-II protocol.

He told me that he maybe able to upgrade his software if he can get the required information. On the reset tool from Volvo or AST, none of this information is entered or needed. What it is needed here, is all the info needed to design such a tool. This information is for sure available at Volvo. But is it available to the general public? I tried VCNA (3 call so far) without success.
