850 Service Light[ALL/1998] posted by Joel Naselow on
Wednesday, 23 July 1997, at 8:10 a.m.
My car runs just fine, no problems at all. It's a 1995 850 non-turbo. I would just like to turn off the engine service reminder light myself, instead of having to go to the dealer as I do my own maintenance (normal stuff, anything major the dealer does it). This light comes on for a minute or so each time the engine is started and then goes off. If it stays on, I assume I have a real problem. The dealer says that a computer has to be attached to the diagnostic connector to get the light to stay off. Is this true? Can I buy some kind of gadget that will allow me to turn the light off, or can I short some pins in the connector (resistively or whatever) to get the same effect?

On the -93 and -94 models you could do this yourself, but from -95 you have to let the dealer do it with a special instrument. You could ask him to delete this function so the service lamp not will light up at all, it's possible.

No stranger! Been touring Europe for two weeks in a nice 960 Executive. We've seen flooded Poland, tested Czech beer, stealthed along the foothills of the Alps in southern Germany, seen the Mount St Michele and the Normandie Beaches (D-day -44) in France, checked out the vine-valleys along the rivers of Mosel and Rhein, and taken a peek on the battlefield where one of our Swedish kings got killed in the year of 1632. I'm back now, to face the reality (i.e. the bills!).

I recently purchased a used 95 T5-R wagon with 24.9k miles on it.
The service light came on at 25k. I asked the dealer about turning it off myself and he said I would have to buy a $300 tool from IPD. As if! I told him that I could do it on my BMW with 2 pieces of wire; he said this was not possible on a volvo. Well last night he called me and said it is possible, and showed me how to do it. Takes about 30 seconds and Volvo even provides the jumper wire as a built in feature. Definitely DO NOT need the $300 IPD tool.

Is your car has the two diagnostic connector (A & B) under the hood near the
ECU box? If so the procedure is simple. The flylead, LED and push switch is there. The $300 tool from IPD is for the 1996 & 1997 850. Those cars do not have
the two diagnostic connector. Instead some of the wire that where going to the diagnostic connector are now routed to the OBD-II connector in the center console.
Also, I heard that IPD tools is not working for the new S70.

Leo,
Since the models since '95 seem to be routing the wires directly to the OBDII connector in the cabin, many folks incorrectly assume that the '95 models did
not feature OBDII, which of course, is a falsehood...It almost sounds like, or you could interptet that Volvo felt too many folks were reading their own fault codes from the under hood Data Link Connectors, and not forking over enough dough to the dealers. So, they removed the connector, forcing owners to go to the dealer since most dont own Volvo Scan tools, and to have the light reset...If that's not the reason they removed it, I'd sure like to know!

I have the wiring diagram for the 1995 850 model (Haynes UK book). In there it is shown that some of the wire used in the diagnostic connector A and B are also routed to the OBD-II connector. I want to make an experiment, if I access these wire directly at the OBD connector maybe I can get the code from the computer. That is if the old way of communicating with the computer is still there.
I did pop-out the OBD-II connector on my 97 855 to see which pin are wired and the color code of the cable used. I found out that additional wire from the old diagnostic connector are routed to the OBD-II connector than what is shown in the Haynes manual (I figured this out by looking at color code on wire).
So last week I decided to order from Volvo the wiring diagram to see if I can figured what did happen to the diagnostic connector wires. Maybe I can make my own tool to read the code or reset the service reminder light (LED and a pushbutton switch). One thing that is not showing in the Haynes book, is where the flylead, the push switch and the LED are connected.
I am still waiting for that book from Volvo. Maybe I will get it this week now that the UPS labor conflict is over.

You probably did not note my correction of my earlier message, you can do this yourself on models up to and including -95 year model. From -96 year model it is no longer possible without special instrument, as they took away the little diagnostic boxes you need to do it.

I have just discovered your site this week, and haven't had a chance to look over everything I've ever wanted to know about my 1996 855 TGA. Can anyone tell me if they've figured out how to reset service light on the 96s ?

Send me your fax number and I'll send instructions.

I just moved into my 1998 T5 M, and it has a service light that I just know is going to annoy me. I do my own maintenance (Just gave my 1983 Saab Turbo up for adoption with 276K miles on all original equipment) Do I really have to buy the service light shut off tool for $300? If anyone has the answer/instructions for what I can do---consistent with keeping the car running properly, please post or e-mail the instructions----my fax is 203-425-3929. Many thanks, Bernie

No you dont!! I reset my srvc light on my '95 850 turbo. It just involves
running through a sequence of button presses on the under hood DLC!

Paul, you're right! You can do it yourself up to and including -95 year model. But, from -96 they've taken away the little boxes and therewith the possibility to do this yourself. I stated the wrong year model, sorry!

Procedure for Resetting the Service Interval Light on Volvo 850
Note : I have not verified this procedure - it came from someone at Compuserve
Go to the "A" on-board diagnostics terminal. It is a 1" X 2" black plastic box in the engine compartment, located just to the right of the windshield washer filler cap. Lift the top. Put the little pin, attached to the top , into socket #7. Turn the ignition on, but don't start the car. Go back to the "A" terminal and push the little black button next to the "A" 4 times at one second intervals. Wait and the light will come on.
Push the button once and wait for the light to go off, then come back on again.
Push the button 5 times and wait for the light to go out, then come back on .
Push the button once and wait for the light to flash. Remove the pin and put it back. Close the terminal.
Start the engine, and you are done for another 5K..

Gentlemen;
I wonder if the same process will work for the newer S-70 that uses OBDII.
Anybody out there with a newer S-70 try this process??

Henry,
Sorry. Volvos after 1995 do not have the diagnostic box under the hood. It will require a special tool.

The 850s use OBDII as well! But, the DLC has been removed, so the reset process
requires a digital tool. IPD sells them for about {gulp} $299 (i think)
