Tires / Wheels 740Turbo Wagon[ALL/1998] posted by Edward Mills on

I just purchased a used 1988 740 Turbo Wagon. It is about to need tires. Current is 195/60-15 on 6"x15 (20mm offset) stock 5 spoke alloys. Unfortunately, 1 wheel is slightly bent. I tend to drive hard and although this is not my primary vehicle, I would consider investing in good tires (Dunlop SPD40M2 or SP8000, Michelin XGTV or XGTV4, Pirellis, Bridgestones, etc.). What are experiences relative to best tires for 740Turbo wagon? Does it eat tires as someone told me?

1. What is widest tire I can reasonably fit without rubbing or other problems? For example, how about 205/55-15 or 205/60-15 or 215/50-15 or 225/50-15? My guess is 205/55-15 or 225/50-15 since they are essentially same diameter.

2. What, if any aftermarket wheels are availble? Local sources indicate $394 to replace one bent wheel!! Are there better sources for stock alloys?

3. What about 16" wheels? Assuming I stay with 20mm offset and find a set of takeoffs or whatever (not the 43mm offset 850 wheels), will they fit? What about Speedometer pinions? What tires (205/55-16 or 205/50-16 or 225/50-16 or what)?

Thanks for responses.

Two Advertisers I've come across in my BMW Roundel: Wheel Wizard unknown phone or address (will look) and Wheel collision center 1.800.rims(7467) www.wheelcollision.com Ihave no firsthand experience with either. WCC advertises core exchange and sales or repair.

The phone number for Wheel Collision Center should read as:

1-800-292-Rims (7467).
