I have had pretty good luck with the 240 series volvos-- I would stay away from the 6 cyl. and the diesels. I personally prefer the manual trans with an overdrive. My wife drives a 1986 740 wagon with the automatic. The drive train seems to be as bulletproof as the B21 engine, but the trim and bodywork seems to be more fragile. Far more squeaks and rattles. A friend just bought a 1984 240 GL with aboiut 150k and it is in excellent shape for $3400. You will likely be looking at something a bit older. I don't know much about the tubo editions, but for rock solid reliability you can't beat a 240 .86 740

I prefer my 740 '86 over my wife's 240 '90 The interior fits me better. I drive a diesel, I guess I was a snail in a former life or just a masochist in this one. My former wagon was a Peugeot 504 diesel, which I enjoyed for 10 years. Diesel salvage parts are few and far between, but they are there. Stay away from diesels unless you've just got to have one. I just happen to work on diesels 3 out of 5 days, so I'm a bit more familiar with them and the older I get the older and slower my vehicles get. Check the basics; body, interior, shoes, brakes, and don't forget that biodegradable wiring used on the mid 80's cars.(which just happens to fall into your price range). Common sense and/or a good friend should guide you. Trust your gut. Don't be enamored by the status of the marque.

My advice is to stay away from the Vovlo turbo engines because they require
more attention. Example you must change your motor oil, oil filter more
often and that goes for the transmission oil. The turbo motor's bearings
and seals will require replacement with time. The 200 series brake system is designed very well to give longer use than the 700 or 900 series. I've only replaced my brake pads on my 240 once since the got it used. I've gotten
triple the miles on them than my 940 has on!
