If you're talking a 740 GLE 16 valve, my trustworthy local Volvo
specialty shop charged me 8.6 hours for replacing the head gasket (not
counting the 6 months it took us to isolate the oil weapage). The
gasket itself should be about $50(est US). Like Ed says, make sure the
work is diagnosed and done by a good shop familiar with Volvos. Since
the head is coming off, any decent shop should include a warpage check
and a de-carbonizing. It would also be reasonable to replace the camshaft
seals and valve cover gasket at the same time.
All in all you're looking at about a $750+ tab based on my experience.
I'm not aware of any extended Volvo warranty on the head gasket, but in
my opinion they shouldn't go this soon (I'd be willing to bet that 90% of
the worn out 120's/140's/240's sitting in the wrecking yards still have
their original head gasket).
