Another thing about the relay. I heard one cause for their failure was the clip which can squeeze the circuit board inside the relay. The clip squeezes it too tightly and can damage the board.
The wires in the shifter handle can definitely give problems. In an auto trans car, that would normally render the o/d lockout inoperative (i.e. the light not coming on).
