Belly Pan? and Other Parts[ALL/1998] posted by Mark Erickson on

I read somewhere (In here I think) about a Belly Pan.... Well I
was changing my oil and noticed that mine seems to be gone was it
made of a Rubber like material? I have all these bolts which have what
appears to be a thick rubber type material underneath them or was the
pan made out of metal and how important is it? I don't like how
exposed the steering rack is on it. IAny Idea what one should cost
used? I'm in Minnesota By the way does anybody know where in Minnesota a
source of Parts would be other than the Dealer?

MArk, Well sounds like somewher someone forgot to put it back or maybe, like mine the Pothole/Iceball monster ate it!
The belly pan is a large plastic shield that covers the area from the radiator to the rear of the crossmember and protects the lower part of the engine from debris and water infestation. They cost about $80 from dealer and if you can find one in a salvage yard they run $25 or so. Since there are remnants of the old one under the bolts you can assume the old on didn't go quietly...though I've had a few shops "forget" to put it vback on on put it back incorrectly IE The front tangs were not inserted properly so it hung down and acted like an air scoop.
I would warn against prolonged operation without this part installed.

Mark,
It is typical that the bolt holes on the belly pan tear out after a while. Sounds like you have remnants of your original one under the remaining bolts. A Volvo aftermarket parts place in Oregon sells replacements for around $50. Just replaced my original belly pan on my 82, 240.
