overdrive light[ALL/1998] posted by alex gruenberg on

In my 1990 240 the overdrive light comes on whenever I start the engine. Usually it goes out after a few seconds, sometimes it goes when I get to overdrive speed. Once it wouldn't go out and the tranny would not shift into overdrive. Where can I look? I suspect a relay problem, but I don't know where that relay is.
Any ideas?

Alex, Could be a few things..
1) Take off the plastic shifter console cover and check the wires going up into the shifter tube, they can fray here and also downline towards the carpet.
2)Pry out the switch in the shift knob and check wiring & function w/ voltohm meter.
3)Pull out glovebox and check relay for bad solder job inside of relay.(Does it work all of a sudden when you hit the glovebox door w/ fist. If so then it's the relay).
4)Bad wiring to solenoid.
It ain't as hard as it looks and it's usually 1 or 2.
