'73 142 - Grinding Rear Wheels[ALL/1998] posted by Craig on

I know I'm in for it...just looking for any info from someone whose tackled the same problem. My '73 142 (B20E) Auto. Trans. everyday car is now making grinding noises from within the wheels...every day.

Noises range from a droll grind on the driver's side to the knocking on the passenger side. All getting worse, too.

Anything come to mind as typical for this car regarding the driveshaft to the rear suspension?

Who's got the best prices on quality used or even new parts for this mission?

Thanks, Craig
Central, Massachusetts

If it's coming from within the wheels, I would guess it's rusty. Of course, if this was the case, it would fix istelf as the rust was polished away. Has this car been sitting?

If it's more central to the rear, it could be your rear differential. These get crapped out from driving a whole lot on snowy/icey/sleet coated roads. Mine has a clunk when I get started, which means that I need to replace the damn thing.

Universal joints are another source of noise on old cars. These are the cheapest to fix of anything I have suggested. They are also very easy to fix.

You might get a better response if you describe the conditions in which the problem presents itslef.

Good Luck,
