Valve seals 84 240 4 cylinder[ALL/1998] posted by M Hoza on

I have a 1984 240 DL wagon with the 2.3 4 cylinder engine. It runs very well but the oil consumption is high (1 qt/600 miles) and it appears to need valve seals or seals and guides. I get a good puff of blue smoke after a period of high manifold vacuum , as when decelerating and then getting back on the throttle.

I hope it is only valve seals. Can these be put without removing the head (compressed air method)? What should I expect to pay for this job at a decent shop?

Is it typical for the valve seals to go before the guides are bad or is this wishful thinking? The engine sat for six months to a year before it was put into this car, is it possibel the seals dried out?

Any help will be appreciated

Mike
